Kalonji is known by many names. In English it is called Samal fennel, in Hindi it is called Kalonji or mangraila, in Bengali it is called as mogrell, in Gujarati kalonji. It is even called as black onion seeds but they are not onion seeds. The taste of these seeds is bitter and spicy and they have a good aroma. It belongs to ‘Ranunculaceae’ family.

Use of kalonji in food:
It is one of the very useful spices. It is used in various dishes like dal, vegetables, naan, bread, cake and pickle etc. kalonji it self can be served as complete dish. It has a shape like that of sesame seeds.
