Palak Mangodi recipe - Spinach Curry with Mangodi

Everyone relish spinach saag why not today we prepare spinach with a new twist by adding mangodi to it.

Ingredients for Spinach Curry with Mangodi

  • Spinach - 250 grams
  • Mangodi - 1/2 cup
  • Tomatoes - 2
  • Green chili  - 2
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece
  • Green coriander - 2 to 3 tbsp (finely chopped)
  • Oil - 2 to 3 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 1 tsp
  • Asafoetida - 1 pinch
  • Salt - less than 1 tsp or to taste
  • Red chili powder - 1/4 tsp

How to make Palak Mangodi

Remove stalk from the spinach and separate out the leaves. Rinse the leaves twice or thrice and place them in a sieve so that extra water drains out. 

Add 2 to 3 tsp oil to the pressure cooker. When the oil is hot add moong dal mangodi and saute it in medium flame until little brown. Add 1 cup water and 1/2 tsp salt to the pressure cooker and cook until it whistles once. After it simmers once, reduce the flame and let it cook for 3 to 4 more minutes.

Meanwhile chop the tomatoes roughly, remove the stalk from green chili and peel the ginger. Place all these veggies to a mixer jar and grind to make a fine paste. Transfer this paste to a bowl

Take spinach leaves in a vessel along with 3 to 4 tbsp water and place it in medium flame to simmer. Keep covered. Drain out the boiled spinach and let it cool down a little. Place the leave in mixer jar as well and make a fine puree.

Heat a pan for making gravy. Add 2 tbsp oil to it and splatter cumin seeds and asafoetida. When the seeds crackle add turmeric powder and coriander. Saute the masala and then add tomato-green chili-ginger paste and red chili powder. Saute the masala until oil starts leaving the edges of masala.

Add spinach puree, boiled mangodi, remaining salt and some green coriander and mix everything really well. Cook the sabzi for 1 to 2 minutes.

Transfer the spinach mangodi sabzi to a serving bowl and garnish with some green coriander. Serve this curry steaming hot with chapatti, naan or rice and relish eating.


  • Skip the use of turmeric powder. It not necessary to add turmeric to green veggies.
